Dawn to Dusk
Somber reflections of nature from first light...to dusk...to after dusk.

"Nature gives to every time and Season some beauties of its own." - Charles Darwin
Ethical concerns are being raised regarding cloning and whether forms of life can or should be recreated by circumventing the natural order of things. What can we expect when nature's bounty and science meet? These paintings and drawings visually represent these futuristic hybrids.
The New York Times art critic, Vivian Raynor noted: "In addition to a flair for the macabre, Ms. Sgarlata has two virtues that are seldom found together: a precise style and a good sense of color."

The butterfly is symbolic of love, death, transformation, and rebirth, as well as a symbol of our fragile and complex ecology. The fragility of the species is the subject of this exhibit. As nature survives and adapts to its environment, what forms or beings can we expect to see? Selections from this installation seek to balance the circumstantial appearance of these mutations with the deeper, emotive reality of what is occurring in the very cells of these strange yet menacing beings.

Mutants
"I am become as one." Alchemists were seeking to change base metal into gold. As an artist, I was seeking to become an alchemist: seeking to transform ordinary metal into extraordinary beings. Three Mile Island and its aftermath was a source of inspiration for this work. The New York Times described them as "futuristic."
These life size mutants were shown at the War of the Worlds exhibit at Princeton, NJ, and also Windows on White NYC.

Fabricated at Papermaking Studio of Kathleen Dinan, New Rochelle, NY, my friend and co-conspirator.
Five panels of handmade paper, four 2'x5', one 2'x2' ("Preparation" is the panel shown here), embedded with elements such as photographs, text, gold pigment, polyurethane and cabochons. Each panel is accompanied by a narrative.
From these handmade paper pieces, large scale individual photos were taken to show the richness of what's contained in each panel. Photographs shown are details from the panels that are available separately or grouped together, approximately 20"x30". Below are observations from the last panel:
Flight:
As Icarus ascended he saw brilliant jewel-shaped planets. He had grown accustomed to his environment now and his life was full of light. Why even the sun seemed closer! Words that would appear in another millennium were known to him now: The future Stephen Crane whispered to him:
"I saw a man pursuing the horizon." "You can never," I said. "You lie," he cried and ran on.
"We'll just see about that," thought Icarus as he soared ever higher into the light.

Selected Paintings
Nature survives and adapts. This series of paintings are rendered in the style and palette of Old Masters and recall Bosch. Under ominous skies and otherwise barren landscapes, there exist these oddly shaped, enormous plants. Mutations that bloomed in the aftermath of Three Mile Island are recalled in these botanical paintings. These paintings were also the subject of a personal memorial, In the Name of the Rose.
